Rotary club donates $10,000 to shelter

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset presented a check for $10,000 to support operations at Pu’uhonua O Nene, a shelter in Kahului for those experiencing homelessness before the Maui wildfires.

Members and friends of the club visited the shelter on Oct. 29 to present the check to Project Vision Hawai’i, which is operating the shelter along with the state Department of Human Services. They then donned work gear to help beautify the site.

The shelter opened at the end of September and has capacity for 150 people. It includes military-grade tents with sleeping quarters, dining space, medical facilities, showers and restrooms.

Katie Zimmerman, community service chairperson for the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, and other club members worked many weekends helping to prepare the site.

The donation for the shelter came from the Rotary District 5000 Foundation Maui Fires Relief effort.
