HIDOE supports expansion of student vision program that provides no-cost eye care and glasses

PĀHALA — More than three dozen students at Ka‘ū High & Pāhala Elementary School received new eyeglasses under an expanded effort by Project Vision Hawai‘i and Vision to Learn to serve more public school students in high-need communities.

The nonprofits provide vision screenings, eye exams and eyeglasses at no cost to students in Title I schools across the state. The Hawai‘i State Department of Education's Title I schools are high poverty campuses where at least 47.2% of students qualify for free or reduced price meals.

The Department helped celebrate the program's expansion at an event Thursday at Ka‘ū High & Pāhala Elementary School where 40 students received new prescription glasses. With funding support from The Edmund C Olson Trust, The Wilber Family Foundation, Kamehameha Schools and First Hawaiian Bank, the program will expand its capacity to serve students statewide. 

The vision program helps support the Department's commitment to ensure students have the tools needed to be successful. Project Vision Hawai‘i and Vision to Learn have provided nearly 10,000 eye exams and more than 6,000 eyeglasses to students in approximately 100 schools on Hawai‘i Island, O‘ahu, Maui, Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i.
