Since the pandemic began, outreach workers from nonprofits Project Vision and Partners in Care have been working with the Institute for Human Services to offer free COVID-19 education and testing for people living on the streets.

Project Vision executive director Darrah Kauhane believes the relationships they've built over the past nine months will help when COVID-19 vaccinations become available for homeless residents.

"We've been doing flu shots and trying to get more and more team members that are able to contribute to that effort in order to prepare us for the vaccine," Kauhane said. "Of course, gaining trust with those individuals who are already very vulnerable or are already living on the streets and have a difficult time trusting."
